Scotland can be one of the most beautiful places in the World; when the weather is kind and it’s a midge free zone. This was the case for the (majority of the) Gold Qualifying expedition for Albyn and St Margaret’s Schools. The rain stopped shortly after the groups set off from Dalwhinnie and didn’t start again until long after the groups had finished their 4 day expedition, nearly 2 weeks later. We felt so fortunate to be out and about during this rare extended period of high pressure, and the groups certainly made the most of the experience.
The groups decided to get up high given the superb visibility. The summits reached included some of the Munro’s in the area including Beinn Bheòil, Beinn a Chlachair and Creag Pitridh. The groups were rewarded with stunning views in all directions, looking across to the Cairngorms, Ben Nevis and Schiehallion.
Having coped with such tough weather on their practice expedition the saying “train hard, fight easy” held a lot of truth for these participants. What might have previously seemed challenging for them, given their previous experience of gale force winds, freezing cold and torrential rain, felt relatively straight-forward. This meant they were all able to achieve far beyond our, and their, expectations.
This was reflected in their presentations back at school the following week. These groups, along with those that completed their qualifying expedition in the Alps, presented to their fellow pupils, parents and teachers. The standard of the presentations was incredibly high, giving accurate and entertaining, reflective accounts of their experiences.
Well done to everyone on these expeditions. We are really proud of what you have achieved and you should be too.
