As the expedition season comes to a close, we had beautiful autumnal conditions for our final Gold DofE Qualifying Expedition of the season. Pupils from Albyn School in Aberdeen sacrificed their holiday weekend to commit to completing their DofE Expedition.

None of the participants seemed disappointed in having done so!  As well as being physical tough, it can be mentally challenging to do an expedition at this time of year. As it’s dark by 7.30pm, there’s around 12 hours to pass in your tent each night. Often it’s harder to do nothing than walk up a steep hill. The groups had all prepared well for this time, and had became very good at playing card games!

After having spent a night at the YHA in Aviemore,  the groups all started their expeditions in Dalwhinnie. They walked on various routes, eventually emerging at Wolftrax, Laggan, 4 days later. One of the highlights had to be finding a beach to camp on. The group were fortunate in that the wind was a westerly, blowing down the loch, so the group were able to pitch their tents correctly for the wind, and have a beach view! The supervisors however, who were camped at the other end of the loch had to make a choice between good pitching for the wind, or a loch view …

Well done to all those participants that completed their Gold Expedition with us last weekend. It was a pleasure to work with you all and see you enjoy the environment that you were in. It was great to watch you all demonstrate a high level of commitment to not only the expedition, but the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award as a whole. Congratulations.
