21 pupils from Albyn School in Aberdeen have just completed their Gold DofE Qualifying Expedition in Chamonix. Their routes took them on sections of the world famous Tour du Mont Blanc footpath, starting in Chamonix and finishing in Courmayeur. The routes took them through 3 countries; France, Switzerland and Italy. They were able to sample the delights of each country enjoying fresh baguettes, local cheeses and the unbeatable ice cream in Italy at the finish!
The weather conditions were a complete contrast to those that were experienced on their practice expedition, but equally as challenging, just at the opposite end of the spectrum. With the temperature being consistently above 30 degrees, the effects of the heat were constantly having to be managed. The groups adapted well to dealing with heat rather than cold and rain!
The groups all appreciated how lucky they were to have unspoilt views of Mont Blanc and the surrounding glaciers. One girl commented “It doesn’t seem real, it is like someone has put up a picture in front of us“! But the views didn’t come without lots of hard work. The nature of the terrain in the Alps means that even if you pick an “easier” route, this will involve walking uphill … lots. The longest day involved over 1000m of ascent to reach the Grand Col Ferret at 2537m. On seeing the view down the other side into Italy everyone agreed that it had been worth it.
