Albyn School were out on their Gold DofE Practice expedition last week. Sadly this coincided with the arrival of “Storm Kamil”, which was forecast to bring severe gales and torrential rain (snow on high ground). The storm came, as predicted, and brought with it some very challenging conditions, especially considering that it’s June!
However, this provided some fantastic learning for coping in very wet weather, down to the very fine detail of what type of lighter to take. Take the wrong type and once it gets wet in the rain, it becomes very difficult to cook a hot meal. Tents required careful pitching, taking precautions for both the wind and potential flooding.
I think that walking in strong winds is often 2 to 3 times more energy sapping then walking in “normal” conditions. This was proven during the 2nd day of the expedition when it was particularly difficult walking on higher ground. It had also snowed to approximately 700m!
Hopefully the motto of “train hard, fight easy” will be true for these groups. We hope that they experience much more favourable weather conditions for their qualifying expeditions, whether it be in the Alps or Scotland, even though they are now prepared for the challenging conditions.
