Last week we were out and about with 2 Gold Qualifying DofE groups from Albyn School and a Silver Qualifying group from Millburn Academy. Both were faced with very challenging conditions, when the weather played out exactly as forecast. It rained non-stop from 5pm on Friday till a similar time the following day. With the wind approaching gale force, the majority of the rain was horizontal!
All the groups adapted their routes and timings accordingly. Certain streams (which had become rivers) needed to be avoided. Tents needed to be pitched well. Careful camp craft was needed to ensure that damp items were not brought into the tents. Tents needed to be taken down in any brief “lull’ in the weather. Personal clothing needed managing to avoid hypothermia.
We had thought the hydro contraction work might be problematic for us, but in fact, the pipes waited to be laid provided very good shelter for the groups!
When the weather finally did improve, the participants were rewarded to with one of the most beautiful of rainbows, seen from the comfort of their tents.
This was a tough expedition. Congratulations to everyone for not only coping throughout the DofE Expedition, but coping with a smile on their face.
