2016 is the 60th anniversary of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. DofE have chosen to mark the occasion with the DofE Diamond Challenge. The DofE are asking you to take part in a challenge, to raise funds to help change the lives of young people.

For my challenge, I decided to attempt something that I had tried before in 2015, but had not succeeded.  I deliberately don’t use the word “fail”.  Although that’s how it felt at the time, on reflection it felt like a success.  Rather than failing to swim 10km, I succeeded in swimming 5km, the furthest I had swum in water that cold. I had succeeded in recognising how cold I was, and prevented myself from suffering from severe hypothermia. However, the challenge of swimming 10km still remained …

Having learned from my previous experience, I recognised that I had 2 choices if I was to succeed in swimming 10km.  I needed to train more in cold water to become acclimatised to it, or pick an event where the water would be significantly warmer. I decided on the later!

Managing to squeeze in as much swimming as possible throughout the summer between DofE expeditions, I was delighted to swim 10km at the Eton Dorney event on 3rd September. It was great to be part of such a well organised event and raise money for a good cause at the same time.  I even enjoyed it and might be tempted to do another long swim …

Thanks to everyone for their kind donations and supporting the DofE.
