The instructors have all been very impressed with the independence and determination of the Gold DofE groups from Victoria College. 26 students successfully completed their Gold Qualifying Expedition in the area surrounding Mont Blanc. They selected routes which took them into France, Switzerland and Italy. They all arrived in Italy in good time for ice cream, just as the only storms of the week were beginning.
Memorable moments included witnessing a group walk for nearly 30 minutes back uphill, when near the end of their day, to retrieve a water bottle that they had lost. They had the insight to be able to work out where they were most likely to have dropped it, and knew that continuing without it in such hot conditions was not an option. Highly commendable!
The boys group entertained themselves throughout the expedition by playing a their own version of “Secret Santa”. Prior to the expedition, they purchased each other a small gift (which has a weight and price limit) that would need to be carried on the outside of their rucksack throughout the expedition. If you were on the Tour du Mont Blanc last week this would explain why you saw people with hanging baskets, paint brushes and blackboards on their rucksacks!
