Millburn Silver group decided to use a venue that was new to us for DofE Expeditions, for their Silver Practice Expedition. It was great to see how the group logically linked up various sections of the Speyside Way with campsites, and incorporated a crossing of the Cromdale Hills on day 3, to give a varied and diverse route.

Day 1 took the group through the beautiful forest surrounding Loch Garten, giving some “technical” navigation to take the most efficient route through the forest. The group camped in a relaxing spot on the banks of the River Spey.  Day 2 was long. However, the group coped really well with a late arrival at their next campsite.  On arrival they just got stuck into the tasks that needed to be completed; pitch tents, eat, sleep! Day 3 took the group up and over the Cromdale Hills into Glen Livet. This gave the group the opportunity to practice some high level hill navigation and route finding away from the paths.

The group worked together really well to overcome any challenges that they faced.  I’m sure this will be of great benefit to them for their qualifying expedition in September.
