It’s always a pleasure to return to Glen Tilt in the Cairngorms, and be able to share the delights that the distinctive Scottish Glen holds with many young DofE participants. This year was no exception. It was clear to see that Glen Tilt had not escaped the storms, which hit the North-East of Scotland in late December. There was evidence of high river levels and hard work in progress repairing the paths.
The expedition began at the end of a period of exceptional weather; it had been warm and dry for over a week. We all knew this weather would break at some point, and most probably with a bang! That it certainly did, about 2 hours into the expedition. The heavy rain storms were so localised that some groups were getting soaked whilst others were still bathing in sunshine. The same could be said for the instructors!
The expedition progressed with an almost alpine weather pattern; dry, warm and sunny until mid afternoon followed by heavy rain storms which quickly passed. This kept groups motivated to leave early (some as early as 6.30am) and walk quickly.
The groups took a variety of routes to all finish at Linn of Dee on the after spending 4 days and 3 nights in a wilderness environment.
Well done to all of the participants and we look forward to working with them again on the qualifying expeditions whether it be in Scotland or The Alps.
