It’s always a real pleasure to work with a group that have organsised all of their expedition themselves. There are a lot of decisions that have to be made along the way including:
- Who is going to be in the group
- Where is the expedition going to be
- When is the expedition going to be and then arranging dates to fit everyone
- Finding an AAP that can run the expedition
- Planning the routes
- Deciding on how to get to the start of the expedition, and booking the transport
- Preparing and packing personal kit
- Planning menus – who will bring what food
The group that I have been working with this week, from North London, has done all of those things. When they actually arrived at the start of the expedition a lot of the hard work was already completed.
They decided to do their practice expedition in the Peak District, doing a circular route, starting in Hathersage and finishing in Edale. They crossed over Bleaklow summit; which we decided is neither bleak nor low! Walking to the summit was certainly good practice for the qualifying expedition which is going to be in the Alps later on this summer.
The practice was just that, and lots of learning has taken place, all of which can be put to good use for the preparation qualifying expedition. Glass jars of food will be left at home, toiletries will be shared and thought given to every action having a consequence.
I look forward to seeing the group again in August, this time in Chamonix …
