In an ideal world we like it if group’s have a tough practice expedition. “Tough” meaning that the participants experience challenging environmental conditions, that are out with our control. This may include lots of rain, poor visibility, high rivers, strong winds and a few midges. By experiencing these under our watchful eye we can help them to adapt and be able to cope in such conditions.
Then if we could, we would arrange fine weather for the qualifying expedition, giving us some reassurance that the groups are unlikely to be phased by anything they face. Not forgetting that we’d also like them to go away from the qualifying expedition having had a really memorable, positive experience.
This is exactly what we got for Albyn and St Margaret’s groups in Scotland this year. I don’t think we could have arranged better conditions for the qualifying expedition last weekend. The wilderness experience was enhanced even further by the lack of other groups, perhaps put off by the closure of Culra Bothy.
