One of my favourite things about the outdoors is visiting new places; whether is be just venturing a little bit further up the hill to see what is over the other side, or going to a completely new area. Therefore it was a delight to be running Millburn Academy’s Bronze DofE Practice expedition in Sutherland, in the North of Scotland.
The area proved to be ideal for Bronze, giving the groups a real wilderness experience without too many navigational challenges. We didn’t see anyone from the start of the expedition until we saw the parents at the end! Operating in such a wild environment gave a great platform for teaching about leaving the area as we found it and minimising our impact.
We couldn’t have asked for better weather for training (although the participants may disagree!). The Saturday was warm and sunny, with a slight breeze to keep the midges away. Camping in such glorious conditions, watching the sun go down, was a real treat and will hopefully inspire the participants to do more camping in the future. However, Sunday was a different story and it gave us an opportunity to show how quickly the conditions can change in the outdoors and how we need to adapt to cope well in them. We woke up to rain and thick mist and it stayed like that for the whole day. In the morning I couldn’t see the loch from the tent pictured above!
