I am normally a bit reluctant to run DofE expeditions in the Cairngorms so late on in the season as it is possible that the weather could already be turning to winter.  This group were determined to complete their silver DofE this year having missed out on a qualifying expedition earlier in the summer due to their athletics commitments.  Due to their high level of fitness I was confident that they would be able to complete their expedition within daylight hours.

And that they did.  Each night they got to camp with a few hours of daylight to spare which was enough time to pitch their tents and cook some food.  Although cooking didn’t take them as long as it had done on their previous expeditions.  They had now been introduced to the wonderful world of gas stoves!  It was much quicker to boil water than it had been with the meths that had been used previously.

We were all prepared for a cold expedition but we need not have worried.  It was exceptionally warm for October (but still cold enough for there to be no sign of the midges) and we didn’t have any rain during the 3 days.  However it was very windy last night which made sleep quite challenging with the tents flapping through most of the night.  When the wind did die down the sound was replaced by the loud groaning from the deer!

Well done to Christian, Nathan, Hamish, Tim and Leo for completing your DofE in such good style.  I look forward to seeing you on gold.
