This past week I was taking a break from working with groups doing their Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and was leading a group on the second stage of the Haute Route for Mont Blanc Treks. The Haute Route is a high-level walking route going from Chamonix to Zermatt. It covers approximately 180 km and has around 12,000m of height again.
I joined the group in Zinal and walked with them for 4 days, taking us in to Zermatt. We walked along the impressive “Europaweg”. As one client said “call that a path … I’ll come back and do it again once they have finished building it.” It really does have to be seen to be believed, crossing exposed sections of the mountainside and huge boulders fields. The first suspension bridge you cross feels big … but it is nothing compared to the 230m one just around the corner!
As we approached Zermatt we got our first glimpses of the Matterhorn, which one of the members of the group is due to climb this week. It felt a bit like a large team expedition where there had been a long trek to the mountain and now it was about getting one man on the summit! Best wishes to Mark on the mountain.
